ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Carlos Agudelo, Director of
Applications Engineering at LiNK
group, wrote this article for Update. He
has been an intermittent member of
SAE since the late 1990s. Agudelo has
the additional title of SAE, iSO, and
PMP Liaison at LiNK group.
with air brakes, we are undergoing the
two-level ballot for SAE J3213 for squeal
noise. It would be almost 20 SAE
documents I have been fortunate to lead to
publication with these three.
For the past few years, I have also been a
liaison to the Working Group of the
European Commission, which is pursuing a
Global Technical Regulation for brake
emissions in 2025.Throughout these
experiences, I have learned a lot from
colleagues and professional friends,
publishing 14 papers. They range from
friction variability to extensive vehicle and
laboratory campaigns to characterize brake
emissions for the California Air Resource
Board and computational fluid dynamics
and transport models in enclosed cooling
air systems for inertia dynamometers.
One of the main benefits of working
with SAE has been the network of
professional friendships beyond the
customer-supplier relationship. Joining
the technical community and
developing a library of technical
documents to make vehicles safer,
cleaner, and more fun to drive (or ride
if you are on an autonomous vehicle) has
been a tremendous experience. I saw the
UPDATE
importance of applied statistics, and my
SAE activities gave me sufficient incentive
to pursue a Six Sigma Black Belt
certification in Austin, TX. In addition, I have
refined my technical writing and public
speaking skills, which has been challenging
as I am not a native English speaker.
Implementing SAE J2975 for copper and
heavy metals in friction materials in 2012
was a unique project. Working seven days
a week for several months as part of a LINK
task force, I relocated my upstairs office to
a brand-new chemical lab at LINK. We
went from having the instruments still in
their delivery boxes to a full ISO 17025
compliance accreditation in less than five
months. The ultimate objective was to
provide one of the first third-party testing
services to the friction industry to
demonstrate compliance and register with
the Better Brakes Rule program in
California and Washington. As a trivia
comment, this became the first testing
facility within LINK with zero equipment
designed or built by LINK.
Other projects where I am leveraging the
volunteering for SAE include:
* The ATPD-2354 of the U.S. Army for
laboratory-based verification of friction
couples for military vehicles. The military
procedure later became the SAE
Recommended Practice J2686.
* Engaging or leading several ISO projects
and building relationships that resulted in
more European members contributing to
SAE documents.
