TECH FOCUS: SmArT CiTiES TECH FOCUS: SmArT CiTiES device-propelled or have propulsion assistance are defined as personal transportation vehicles designed to transport three or fewer people. They are considered consumer products but may be owned by shared- or rental-fleet operators. Micromobility vehicles have expanded sustainable mobility options in cities and promoted technology integration for transportation of people and goods. Having previously published a taxonomy and classification (J3194_201911) and Kinematic Performance Metrics for Powered Standing Scooters (J3230/1_202102), the SAE Powered Micromobility Vehicles Committee is building on these standards. The committee is currently working on two Work in Progress documents. The Powered Micromobility Vehicle Identification document is intended to provide a means of identification of classes and characteristics through use of an alpha-numeric identifier. The intent is to support accurate identification by data collectors (e.g., EMS, law enforcement) and thus promote uniformity and comparability in safety data. Another WIP standard establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for powered standing and seated scooters as defined in SAE J3194. This standard establishes a set range of sound characteristics for sound frequency and sound pressure levels for select vehicle operation scenarios. In doing so, the committee is concerned with how the vehicles may be safely incorporated in the transportation infrastructure. n ABOUT THE AUTHOr Pooja Chaudhari, Project Specialist - Technical Programs, SAE international, wrote this article for Update.
