New SAE report looks at grid energy buffering
Variable renewable energy (VRE), such as
photovoltaic solar and wind turbines, will
require new approaches to buffering energy
within the grid. This must include significant
ancillary services such as inertia, frequency
response, short-term energy storage, and
longer-duration storage to buffer seasonal
variations in supply and demand.

Energy Buffering
Jody E. Muelaner, PhD
provided by leveraging the battery resources
of electric vehicles (EVs) for frequency
response and energy storage for durations
of up to a few hours, together with baseload
and dispatchable power for longer-duration
buffering. Different approaches will be
required in different regions, dependent on
climatic, economic, and strategic factors.
Efficient investments in these resources will
be facilitated by moving away from the
crude, levelized cost of electricity metrics to
measures which consider the value of
energy buffering and costs of transmission.
A new SAE EDGE Research Report,
Electric Vehicle Charging on Grid Energy
Buffering, addresses all of these matters in
detail.
To realize the potential of vehicle
batteries for demand response and grid
services, improved battery management,
control strategies (which protect grid
security), and enhanced cybersecurity will
all be required. Second-life batteries are
currently uneconomic relative to recycling,
although automation of repurposing
processes may change this.

Hybrid and fuel-cell EVs have significant
potential to act as " peakers " for longerduration
buffering, reducing cost in a VREintensive
grid. Such an approach requires
little technical development and utilizes
existing supply chains. It has the potential to
provide all the long-term energy buffering
required by a VRE-intensive grid. However, it
has been largely overlooked and now faces
significant regulatory challenges. n
