SAE Faculty Advisor Adds AWim Fuel Cell
Challenge for High School Women
When Chris Bachman, Assistant
Professor of Engineering at
California State University-Los
Angeles, visited the SAE A World
In Motion (AWIM) booth at WCX
2022, he immediately started
thinking of ways to incorporate
AWIM's STEM education
curriculum into the university's
LAunchPad Summer Program.
Bachman, recipient of SAE's
Ralph R. Teetor Educational
Award for his work as a Faculty
Advisor for Baja SAE and
Formula SAE teams, quickly
identified a natural tie-in
between the AWIM Fuel Cell
Challenge and their week-one
focus on sustainable energy.
Now in its third year,
LAunchPad is designed to
encourage more high school
women to explore STEM. The
two-week program currently
targets rising seniors from 50
high schools in underserved
communities around east Los
Angeles.
The event kicked off on day
one with SAE Trustee Dr. Anita
Sengupta, Founder & CEO of
Hydroplane Ltd. and Professor of
Astronautical Engineering at

" She actually worked on the Mars Rover. Getting to
know people who have done such cool things was so
crazy " exclaimed rising senior Itzel Santamaria.
From there, the students jumped right and started
building their AWIM Fuel Cell kits although there was
one small wrinkle. To make the challenge open ended
and add another design component, student teams
were asked to incorporate solar panels into their toy
cars instead of the standard battery packs.
With Cal State LA's hydrogen station and other
sustainable energy sources on campus, the students
had the unique opportunity to connect their smaller
scale projects to their actual real-life applications.
They could see hydrogen cars filling up and solar
panels all over the buildings.
" We all really enjoyed this program. Learning,
hands-on, it's really inspiring. To all the little girls out
there that like math and science and are a little bit
creative, you might want to look into this program for
when you're in high school " added LAunchPad
