IT WOULD BE A GROSS AND UNFAIR
GENERALIZATION TO CLAIM THAT THE
YOUNGER GENERATIONS ARE LESS
GRATEFUL THAN THEIR ELDERS.
It brings to mind cranky old men lashing
out not because of any real grievance
against young men and women, but rather
because that's the only way they know how
to express negative emotions, such as
regret and envy for failing to have taken
advantage of the opportunities presented
to them when they were young.
Doesn't take a genius to suggest that

expressing gratefulness and taking
advantage of opportunity are very effective preventives against a
future self whose mind otherwise would decay into an epic battle
between ingratitude and envy.
These observations came to mind when looking at the photo on
page 30 of this issue. A volunteer graciously sharing his knowledge
and time with a young man whom he doesn't even know is what
makes the SAE Collegiate Design Series (CDS) such a wonderful
program. Presumably, the student in the photo was grateful for the
professional's eagerness to help, and presumably the engineer
thinks better of himself for having done so.
All of this is simply to encourage student engineers to up their
gratitude game. Nothing but good can come of doing so ... for all
parties involved. Similarly, nothing but good can come of doing a bit
more to dig for and take advantage of opportunities. SAE is full of
those things: scholarships, awards, recognitions, freebies and more.

any other skill, expressing gratitude becomes easier and more
fulfilling with practice.

members of SAE International, MOMENTUM wishes to express
utmost gratitude to the hundreds of CDS volunteers happily putting
in thousands of hours to benefit students. To Nick of page 30, and to
