ON KINDNESS AND SUCCESS
HELLO, MY NAME IS GRETCHEN UHRINEK AND I'M THE NEW
EDITOR OF MOMENTUM. IT'S GOOD TO
MEET YOU-I HOPE YOU STAY A WHILE.
If this were an episode of Mister Rogers,
this is the part where I'd be slipping into a
cozy cardigan and tying a pair well-loved
Converse sneakers, humming the song of
my heart.
You see, I grew up in Latrobe, PA, which
happens to be Fred Rogers's hometown.
Trolleys, tiger puppets, and sweaters
provided a gentle backdrop to most of my
childhood school events. My high school
even had a fairly large memorial (some
might say a shine) to the man. As a kid, I
took it for granted. As a teenager, I thought it was lame. As an
adult, I'm grateful. To grow up in the shadow of kindness is no small
thing.
Gretchen Uhrinek
MOMENTUM Editor
So in this, my first editorial column, I want to celebrate kindness.
If you're reading this, then presumably you're a college student on
the verge of something great and terrifying. You're also probably
juggling intricate social dynamics, seemingly impossible
assignments, sleepless nights, high expectations, and pressure from
all sides. As someone only a few years removed from the college
experience myself, here's my greatest piece of advice: be kind. (My
second greatest piece of advice? Stay hydrated.)
It's not original advice, but it's solid. Mister Rogers himself said,
" There are three ways to ultimate success. The first way is to be
kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind. "
The previous editor of MOMENTUM, Patrick Ponticel,
demonstrated kindness on a daily basis. He touched the lives of
many and never forgot to acknowledge a person's humanity. When
he asked about your day, it wasn't perfunctory-he was genuinely
asking you about you. (By the way, Pat's not dead, he's just retired,
and we're all super happy for him!)
Now, I promise my future editorial columns won't be so soft. (Or
maybe they will? Time will tell.) Either way, humor me with one
final affirmation from Latrobe's hometown hero:
" You always make each day a special day. You know how: by just
your being you. There's only one person in the whole world that's
like you, and that's you. "
It's the truth. And I'm so excited to meet you. n

SAE International Sections
SAE International sections are local units comprised of 100 or more SAE International members
in a defined technical or geographic area. The purpose of local sections is to meet the technical,
developmental, and personal needs of the SAE members in a given area. For more information,
please visit sae.org/participate/membership/sections.
SAE International Collegiate Chapters
Collegiate Chapters are a way for SAE International student members to get together on their
campus and develop skills in a student-run and -elected environment. Student Members are vital
to the continued success and future of SAE. While your course work teaches you the engineering
knowledge you need, participation in your SAE collegiate chapter can develop or enhance other
important skills, including leadership, time management, project management, communications,
organization, planning, delegation, budgeting, and finance. For more information, or for how to
find your local chapter, please visit sae.org/participate/membership/collegiate-chapters.
