bonds of friendship between collegiate chapters within our
state.
The Formula SAE teams were excited to come together this
year to reignite the tradition that was previously thwarted by
pandemic conditions. Each SAE student member that
participates in the event is eligible to apply for the SAE Florida
Collaboration Scholarship, sponsored by the SAE Florida
professional section. This flagship scholarship is intended to
promote cooperative collaboration between collegiate
chapters that participate in the Collegiate Design Series with
the hopes of leading one another to success through
innovation.
" We feel like partnering with other SAE teams and members
has helped our team grow stronger from a design standpoint
and will hopefully lead to better results at competition, " said
Colton Salek from ERAU Motorsports. Salek is the winner of
this year's scholarship.
The majority of collegiate chapters within the state of
Florida focus on Formula SAE, designing, building, and
competing with internal combustion engines. As the
automotive industry shifts toward electric vehicles, it is
important to delve into all resources of knowledge, from FSAE
alumni to local business sponsorships to cross-college
collaboration. With only one FSAE Electric team in the state so
far, the other collegiate chapters in the state will rely on
knowledge-sharing and collaboration to make the transition in
years to come, learning from one another and hoping to avoid
making any mistakes twice.
When asked to reflect on collaborative efforts over the past
year, Salek remarked, " At the 2023 IC Competition, we worked
with UCF throughout the week and developed a pretty good
friendship between the teams. Personally, I met with some of
the people in charge of their business team to help develop my
team's strategy for next competition season. "
Although the competition may be fierce, the collaboration is
friendly. These alliances focus on sharing knowledge and
resources in order to lead to engineering innovation and
successful partnerships, both virtually and in person. Although
there are only ten collegiate chapters of SAE in the state, they
are arguably the tightest knit group of teams and students in
the competition series. n
Rebecca Vollmann is the Section Treasurer
and Vice-Chair of SAE Florida. In 2021, she
earned her B.S. in mechanical engineering
from the University of Central Florida.
