engines required updated designs to
address the different in-cylinder behavior
associated with them.
Three main design variables including
port angle, port height, and charging
configurations for total of 75 iterations
were simulated over the course of 80
calendar days. Simulation results were able
to demonstrate an absolute increase in
brake thermal efficiency of 1.1 % with an
optimized 2-cylinder design.

" Next-Generation Hybrid Wheel Loaders "
The automotive industry is under
unprecedented pressure to
reduce fuel consumption of
its products in recent years.
This presentation reveals
some aspects of a
collaborated research
effort by Purdue University,
University of Wisconsin - Madison and John
Deere, which aims at realizing over 10% on a
next-generation wheel loader through
UPDATE
for emulating the vehicle performances and
used as a platform for validation is
demonstrated, followed by the design of a
supervisory-level power management
system that is capable of delivering
operator-expected vehicle power,
maintaining highly efficient engine
operation while minimizing battery
degradation. For valid evaluation of how
much fuel saving can be realized by the
next-generation wheel loader, a production
duty cycle is reproduced in simulation and
resultant simulation results are compared
to real experimental data collected from
baseline wheel loader. It is shown that,
when compared to the baseline vehicle, the
next-generation vehicle is capable of
producing the same amount of power that
would meet the operator's demand, while
achieving over 12.6% fuel saving. n
