" Automated driving is one of the major
technological developments in the
automotive industry, which influences
future mobility and improves quality of life.
Based on research surveys, there are
suggestions that Level 3 and 4 autonomous
vehicles (AVs) will be widely deployed in
the short term and that, by 2040, AVs will
likely constitute approximately 50% of
vehicle sales and 40% of all vehicle travel.
At the same time, important challenges still
need to be overcome to prevent the disuse
of AV technology and to ensure AVs
become part of our daily life. The enormous
growth in numbers, diversity, and complexity
of CAVs has been driven by:
* Enhancements of fundamental scientific
understanding
* Technological convergence of
computing, communication, and
miniaturization

professorship) for electrical measurement
and signal processing. Since 2017, he has
been a full professor of automated driving
at the Institute of Automation and Control,
Graz University of Technology. In addition,
he is divisional director and scientific head
of the automotive electronics and software
department of the Virtual Vehicle Research
Center in Graz. Since 2015, he has been the
Vice President of the ARTEMIS Industry
Association (European Research
Association on Embedded Control Systems)
Fruehling
has had a 45-year engineering
career that includes technical leadership
positions for mission critical systems in
medical, automotive, and communications
companies. He is an active member of
several SAE standard generation groups. In
the automotive industry alone, he has
contributed to crucial systems like ABS
electronic controllers, lock-step
microcontroller systems, pressure
transducers, and speed/position sensors for
several major OEMs. In the medical
industry, he helped develop heart-lung
machines, kidney dialysis pumps, and other
innovations. n
