SAE journal puts focus on
simulation in special issue
From the Guest Editors'
introductory letter, we read:
" The pace of
development for
Connected and Automated
Vehicles (CAVs) in the
global transportation
system continues to
increase ever since a
prototype by Google was
reported in 2010. The
2020 Autonomous
Vehicles Readiness Index
ranked 30 countries on
their state of readiness for
the technology. Singapore
topped the rankings, but
the clustering was tight
among the top 15 [1].
Words like revolution,
transformational, and
ubiquity rarely get tossed
about, but are still
commonly applied to this
field....
A key understanding
shared across the industry
is the necessity of
simulation as a method for
testing and validating
CAVs. A RAND report laid
to rest any doubts about
this with a basic statistical
analysis. To prove that
CAVs could reduce the
current rate of 1.09

fatalities per 100 million miles, CAVs would need
to drive 11 billion miles [3]. In this light, simulation
tools and frameworks are elevated from nice-tohave
to need-to-have. However, this lays
additional responsibility on such tools. Whereas
before an organization might ask " what are our
opportunities to use this simulation tool that
does A, B, and C?, " they now demand " our path
forward is intractable unless we have a
simulation tool that does X, Y, and Z. "
This special issue highlights several projects
that either develop simulation tools or devise
applications that make use of them. We hope
the qualifier " emerging " adequately
communicates the fast-moving and dynamic
nature of ongoing work. Many new tools and
frameworks are being developed for research,
commercial, and open-source communities.
The articles selected for this special issue will
expose the reader to several proposed
frameworks that address the ultimate
problem with different, yet innovative,
approaches. "
This special issue is composed of two issues of the
journal, which are loosely labeled as " frameworks " and
" applications. " The first issue (published in December
2022 and available online here) presents several
simulation frameworks, along with a novel use of
driving simulation. Articles in Part 1 of the issue are:
* Physics-Based Simulation Solutions for Testing
Performance of Sensors and Perception Algorithm
under Adverse Weather Conditions
* Co-Simulation Platform for Modeling and
Evaluating Connected and Automated Vehicles and
Human Behavior in Mixed Traffic
