Electrification is an enabler for
automated vehicles, SAE authors say
In recent years, public and private attention and
investment appear to have swung away from ADS and
driverless vehicles to EVs and the imperative to meet
global climate-related goals.
So say the authors of a new SAE EDGE Research
Report, Automated Vehicle and Infrastructure Enablers:
Electrification. Kelley Coyner, JD co-founded
Innovation4Mobility to bring communities and
technology providers the know-how needed to make
accessible, automated, connected, electric, and shared
(A2CES) mobility systems a reality. Jason Bittner, MPA,
a technical researcher and planner, specializes in
transportation infrastructure asset management,
connected and automated vehicles, and policy analysis.
According to the authors, ADS alone offer some
fuel efficiency and emission reductions for ICE
vehicles, but relying on that technology alone will
lead to falling short of goals established by the global
community during the 2021 United Nations Climate
Change Conference.
They say that automation combined with
electrification offers some additional efficiencies as
well as operational and safety benefits. " History is
likely to repeat itself if we fail to provide the
infrastructure needed to support charging. In 1910,
gasoline, steam-powered, and electric vehicles were
roughly tied with respect to ownership. Electric power
was largely unavailable beyond industrial sites, and
within 20 years, ICE technology left EVs in the dust. "
" Technology shifts combined with an environmental
imperative are giving EVs another chance. Range
anxiety, a dearth of publicly available charging
locations, weak or insufficient electrical grids, " dirty "

EMERGING ISSUES IN NEW MOBILITY
sources of power, and supply
chain challenges stand in the
way of achieving massive
increases in EV adoption. Public
and private investors, battery
researchers and manufacturers,
policymakers, energy and
transportation IOOs, OEMs, and
AV developers all hold parts to
play in making this happen. "
" The potential benefits of an
A2CES system are manifold.
Combining these technologies
with greater shared use, facility
access, and ownership will likely
accelerate the societal and
commercial benefits of vehicle
automation. " n
