COMMENTARY
An alternative blueprint for light-duty
transportation decarbonization
The 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray 3lZ coupe (photo depicts pre-production model) is a hybrid that produces a combined 655
horsepower from both the electric motor and Small Block V-8 of 6.2 l displacement. The source of the motor's 160 horsepower
is a 1.9-kWh battery pack.
hydropower, while Wyoming still
relies largely on coal. Electric
vehicles have reached 18% of
new car sales in California, but
this number is just 6% for the
entire U.S. Clearly, many states
are neither ready nor willing to
make the transition to EVs
anytime soon.
And why should they? In more
than half of U.S. states, the
definitive decarbonization winner
is not a battery electric vehicle,
but a full hybrid electric vehicle.
Full hybrids use both an internal
combustion engine and an
electric motor, and they require
no charging from the grid. In
addition, hybrids are very
efficient. Eleven full hybrid
models offer over 50 MPG
combined city/hwy, and 26 offer
a combined fuel economy of

more than 40 MPG (for MY 2022, according to https://
www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/index.shtml). Increased
hybrid use would allow the U.S. to focus initially on
building up the charging infrastructure in states where
EVs currently offer an environmental benefit, while also
reducing emissions in states with electrical grids that
still rely primarily on fossil fuels. This strategy also acts
as a fail-safe if the U.S. does not achieve 100% clean
electricity by 2035, an inherent requirement of the U.S.
National Blueprint that is by no means guaranteed.

the U.S. passenger car fleet, " An Alternate Light-Duty

Through this alternate blueprint, we will make
substantial progress toward achieving net-zero
emissions for light-duty transportation by 2050, with
the (huge) added benefit of minimizing GHG emissions
as much as possible along the way. By investing in
multiple technologies, these results will be achieved
regardless of what happens with the U.S. electrical grid
in the future, safeguarding our decarbonization goals
from unintended consequences and unforeseen events
