TECH FOCUS:
SUSTAiNABlE MOBiliTy
Delivering on the promise of electric vehicles
reliability and efficiency - and
implementing the new
engineering paradigms that
support them - are matters of
focus and effort. While these are
non-trivial, they are conquered
with the cadence and attention
to detail that engineers love.
Our more complicated
problems are human ones. We
do not have enough qualified
people to perform these new
tasks. Li-Bridge, a public-private
partnership to, among other
things, define the skills gap in
domestic battery development,
projected as many as 300,000
new jobs will be created. These
jobs will require the expected
expertise of scientists and
engineers and managers. The
overwhelming need, however,
will be for technicians and
workers, once referred to as blue
collar, now perhaps more aptly
called green collar: those
responsible for front line
manufacturing and machine
supervision. Li-Bridge estimates
this workforce will need to grow
by 10x to meet demand.
This represents a set of gamechanging
opportunities: a chance
for a new kind of greentech
worker to be trained and
certified. Our electric vehicle

service equipment (EVSE) certification program - a
partnership with L.A.-based Chargerhelp! - aspires to
equip workers who aren't usually thought of first for
technical jobs: women, people without college
degrees, and people of color.
This is just one of many promises associated with
EVs. Fulfilling them will require broader-minded
business, education and training leadership, continued
government commitment and, perhaps as important,
a sense of urgency. Our last industrial revolution - the
one that brought us our modern world with all of its
benefits as well as our environmental crisis - took
over a century. I believe we are undergoing a new
industrial revolution that must mitigate the potentially
catastrophic consequences of the last one, while
building a new version of our world that strives to be
fairer. This has to be done in a matter of decades -
and with more people on the planet than ever before.
That's as large a task as we've ever faced. We can't
afford to waste a minute. n
