COMMErCiAl AND OFF-rOAD vEHiClES
getting many of the headlines,
most vehicles sold in the last
year still had an internalcombustion
engine. OEMs
therefore must continue to
improve upon traditional ICE
technologies to meet these
upcoming standards, while also
investing in alternative
powertrains such as hybrids,
electrics, hydrogen-powered
vehicles, and engines running on
renewable fuels.
The EPA is expected to
announce new " Phase 3 "
greenhouse gas standards in the
coming months. No details were
available at the time of the
writing of this paper, but it is
expected that the new standards
will be aimed at accelerating the
adoption of efficiency improving
ICE technologies and zeroemitting
powertrains in the
heavy-duty sector.
It is expected that the CO2
target for heavy-duty vehicles in
Europe, which requires a 30%
reduction by the end of this
decade, will be revised in the
coming year. Key questions
remain on well-to-wheel
accounting of GHG emissions,
and whether H2 fueled engines
will be treated as zero-emitting.

regulations were published for light- and heavy-duty
vehicles. Broadly, the new standards effectively cover
a wider range of real-world operating conditions with
extended test conditions, tighter limits, inclusion of
particles down to 10 nm, removal of conformity
factors and an increased emphasis on cold start
emissions. New species are regulated and for the first
time, there are limits on non-tailpipe emissions and
battery state of health requirements.
The European Commission
published the first trailer regulations
for O3 and O4 category vehicles,
requiring the use of a standardized
CFD (computational fluid
dynamics) tool developed to assess
impact of aerodynamic drag and tire
rolling resistance on CO2 emissions.
The U.S. on-road heavy-duty fleet
is very diverse, with widely varying
daily mileage, operating
characteristics, and fuel use based
on the end application (see figure on
page 15). Long-haul trucks make up
only 9% of the fleet but are
responsible for nearly half of the
