TECH FOCUS:
COMMErCiAl AND OFF-rOAD vEHiClES
industry, company, and culture. You would
think that everyone, whether new or
experienced, sees the value, but that is
simply not the case. Some don't see the
value in networking, some don't see the
value in mentoring, and some don't see
the value in technical conventions. So that
is our challenge: how do we show value?
We are growing a YEP network. Not
only at COMVEC between suppliers,
customers, and OEMs, but also at
universities and high schools. Inviting
Young & Emerging Professionals to local
SAE chapters. Opening the doors to OnHighway,
Off-Highway, and Defense.
Inviting people from all backgrounds.
We are giving YEPs a seat at the table.
Whether that is through speed mentoring,
which has been a success and will
continue to be, opening the YEP
Committee to more members, or YEP
specific social events for peers to discuss
how they are changing the industry,
defining their career development, solving
technical problems, and advising others
how to succeed.
We are creating new ways for COMVEC
to be valuable. Typically, there are VIP
evening events for industry leaders to
network. So the question was asked, and
rightly so, can't we just do that for YEPs?
And we did! COMVEC 2022 was the first
year a YEP evening social was organized,
and it was a success. We are pairing YEPs
UPDATE
to groups of high schoolers to tour
COMVEC, sit in technical sessions, talk to
exhibitors, climb in trucks, and much more.
There is value in corporate leadership
opening the doors to Young & Emerging
Professionals by encouraging involvement
at local or international organizations,
providing opportunities to get connected,
and then mentoring one on one
throughout the process. There is value in
YEPs showcasing what it means to be a
technical leader to high schoolers. It is
important to network among peers. Lastly,
it does not hurt to ask.
Thanks to my manager for thinking of
me and putting my name in the pool to be
considered for COMVEC 2021. And to my
company, Allison Transmission, which topdown
supports volunteering on SAE
COMVEC's committees and seeing the
value in YEP. SAE International for
granting me Chair, Young & Emerging
Professionals Committee. Also, thanks to
the COMVEC Executive Council for
allowing YEP Committee Chairs a seat at
the table to discuss what's next for YEP at
COMVEC 2023 and beyond, and to the
previous YEP Chair member for
proactively opening the door and pushing
for me and others to get involved. n
