thermoplastics typically offer other
properties that may help to avoid costly
secondary operations, increase
sustainability or enhance aesthetics.
Two examples are internally lubricated
compounds with molded-in color that
reduce unwanted buzz-squeak-rattle (BSR)
noise without the use of
polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and
infrared (IR) transparent but visually
opaque resins that combine performance
and style for the covers of driver monitoring
system sensors.

Enjoying peace and quiet in the cabin
As the industry moves away from internal
combustion engines in favor of electric
vehicles (EVs), the transition is being felt
in the cabin, not just the powertrain.
Electric vehicles and hybrids are so quiet
that there is little engine noise to cover up
annoying squeaks and vibrations caused
by friction and stick-slip behavior
between plastic parts or metal and plastic
components. These sounds can disturb
occupants seeking a calm, tranquil cabin
where they can enjoy infotainment or
conversation.
Many material solutions for BSR reduction
involve secondary operations, such as the
application of nonwoven tape spacers or
external lubricants. Others rely on
tribological additives containing
perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a chemical
whose use is restricted by the European
