Electric and autonomous off-highway ops
Consumer electronics companies and
global automakers routinely garner
much of the attention and headlines
stemming from the annual CES Show in
Las Vegas. The 2024 iteration in early
January was no different, as evidenced
by SAE Media's extensive show coverage
at www.sae.org/news. The past half decade
or so, however, has witnessed more
and more off-highway and commercial
vehicle manufacturers joining in on the
action. (See page 5 for one example.)

machines simultaneously.

cleaner propulsion systems are another
major driver of such development efforts.
Doosan Bobcat chose the Las Vegas
venue to unveil what it calls the industry's
first autonomous and electric articulating
tractor. Enabled by Agtonomy's software
and embedded-computing technology,
the Bobcat AT450X was developed to
perform labor- and time-intensive tasks
autonomously or remotely, including
mowing, precision spraying and weeding,
and product and material transport.

swappable battery source, the machine

Also presented at CES 2024 was HD
Hyundai's lofty goal " to fundamentally
transform the way humanity builds the
future. " The company's Xite Innovation
concept envisions applying AI, digital
technologies and electrification to construction
sites and equipment to realize
site autonomy. The company says its
X-Wise AI platform for fleet management
will be applied to all its industrial solutions
as a base technology going forward.
X-Wise Xite takes it one step further -
the intelligent site-management solution
will connect all construction equipment
equipped with X-Wise in real time.
HD Hyundai also displayed a cab-less
excavator featuring a radar sensor and
smart All-Around View Monitoring camera
system that detects obstacles while
operating autonomously. Four individual
wheels enable the machine to traverse
steep terrain that could be dangerous
for manned operation.
" The construction industry has laid the
foundation for human civilization, and
yet it remains one of the slowest today
when it comes to technology and innovation, "

Chung said during a CES keynote. His
implication? That technology implementation
must accelerate, and HD Hyundai
is committed to doing just that.
Expect autonomous, connected and
electric product reveals to continue to
dominate the 2024 tradeshow circuit in
the coming months. I can't see that
slowing down.
