TECH FOCUS: GROUND VEHICLES
AND ELECTRIFICATION
Right now, electric charging
stations are being rapidly
deployed to meet EV charging
needs; the parking-lot or
standalone charging station for
light-duty EVs (LDVs, or
passenger cars) is a common
sight. Less common are charging
facilities for medium- and heavyduty
EVs, like delivery vans,
refuse trucks, and semi tractors.
There's also the question of
how much electricity will be
needed to support all these
EVs. The answer to that is: " a
lot. " To put this into
perspective, consider: an
average household uses about
three one-hundredths of a
megawatt hour per day (0.028
MWh). In a recent transition
planning effort for a utility
medium- and heavy-duty
(MHD) fleet to EVs, it was
determined that those new
vehicles combined would
require 35.5 MWH per
day-that's the equivalent
of 1,260 households, and this transition affected
only one-third of the utility's full fleet.
Widening our view, a 2017 study by Black & Veatch
revealed that if all LDVs in the United States were
electrified-that would be approximately 240 million
vehicles, based on 2014 volumes-the required
electrical demand would be around 926 terawatts
(TWh) per year (one TWh is equal to one million MWh).
Converting all MHDs to EVs would add a requirement
of an additional 450 TWh per year; an overall annual
electricity demand for the United States alone,
just to charge EVs, of 1,376 TWh. By comparison,
the entire global electricity demand in 2020
for EVs was approximately 80 TWh-or just
about 6% of the electricity that would be
needed to electrify the ground vehicles
in the U.S. alone.
Obviously, it is critical that the
electricity demand be met for
ground vehicle electrification
to succeed. CALSTART is
working with its utility and
industry partners to
ensure that this
demand can be met
by electricity
produced from
clean energy
