Why is the VRUSC needed?
The numbers:
* The International Transport
Forum's IRTAD Road Safety
Annual Report estimates that
approximately 1.35 million
people die in road traffic
crashes worldwide each year,
with vulnerable road users
(VRUs) accounting for nearly
50% of those deaths.
* In the United Kingdom, cyclist
fatalities have increased by
15% between 2019 and 2020,
according to the Department
for Transport.
* In Canada, pedestrian fatalities
have increased by 26%
between 2010 and 2019,
according to Transport
Canada.
* In the United States, the
Governors Highway Safety
Association (GHSA) reports that
at least 7,508 pedestrians were
killed in traffic crashes in 2022,
the highest number since 1981.

Okay, yeah, I can see why the VRUSC's work is
important! Could you tell us a bit of the history
behind the consortium?
The backstory: SAE ITC and SAE International have a
decades-long commitment to all aspects of
transportation safety. It's no secret that while it's as
safe as it ever has been to be an occupant in a vehicle,
the numbers of those getting injured or killed outside
of moving vehicles continues to rise in most areas of
the world.
The VRUSC was founded as a result of
conversations occurring both inside and outside the
organization regarding interest to have a focal point
for VRU safety. As this discussion was occurring, I was
made aware of an interesting safety effort called the
Bicycle-to-Vehicle (B2V) Leadership Group. The B2V
had run a few small, connected bike-vehicle projects
and wanted to expand the reach of their efforts from
an initial focus largely on bikes and cars to a broader
global standards effort to reduce collisions between
vehicles and all shared road users. We agreed that
goal fit the mission of SAE ITC, which is to bring
