Vehicle architecture considerations in the EV and AV era

Vehicle designs that integrate new
technologies and manage to accommodate
passengers with a multitude of needs and
maintain performance goals is one of the
most interesting design challenges of the
day. Is it possible to design an electric
vehicle to meet critical egress tolerances?
How do we ensure vehicles are designed
for optimal access and performance
simultaneously?
As these design challenges grow across
the industry, it can be difficult to acquire
the skills and knowledge to successfully
achieve these goals. SAEI's Professional
Development team has partnered with Dr.
David Schmueser of Clemson University's
renowned ICAR program to bring these
skills to industry through the course Vehicle
Architecture for Hybrid, Electric,
Automated, and Shared Vehicle Design.
In this course, electric and hybrid vehicle
engineers and designers learn how to
adequately configure required powertrain
system components to achieve needed
performance, occupant accommodation,
and operational objectives. They learn how
to differentiate between vehicle motor/
transmission design packaging for
conventional electric motor and in-wheel
electric motor design. They also learn how

structural design, and computer-aided engineering
instruction.
to recognize the design requirements for
effective electric vehicle battery placement,
mounting, and enclosure design and to
identify the sensor types, function, and
packaging requirements for autonomous
electric vehicle operation. Their goal is
to enable efficient structural design,
effective packaging of required
components, and efficient vehicle
performance for shared and
autonomous operation.
Dr. Schmueser, who has
worked at General Motors and
the Batelle Research Lab and
has over 30 years of vehicle
design and optimization
experience, designed a course that
