As the aerospace industry turns
to additive manufacturing (AM)
to improve their production
processes, it's important to ask:
why?
First, some background: AM is
a type of advanced 3D printing,
far beyond anything you may
have handled at home.
Sometimes the terms are used
interchangeably, but the main
difference between AM and
" regular " 3D printing is that the
latter is typically done on a small
scale, at home, and involves the
creation of objects by stacking
layers upon layers of material.
While AM encompasses various

technologies and materials, 3D printing usually refers
to desktop-scale machines that create objects from
materials like plastics, resins, or filaments. (3D
drawing pens are a pretty fun toy, although their
functionality feels a lot like creating sculptures with a
hot glue gun.)
AM, similarly, is a manufacturing process that builds
3D objects by adding successive layers of material
based on a digital design. What sets AM apart is its
available range of advanced technologies, like
stereolithography (using a UV laser to solidify layers of
a liquid photopolymer resin), fused filament fabrication
(extruding thermoplastic materials through a heated
nozzle-yes, almost like a hot glue gun), electron beam
melting (using electrons to fuse metallic powders
together to create metal parts), or selective laser
sintering (using a high-power laser to fuse powdered
materials together).
