In a nutshell-all AM is 3D
printing, but not all 3D printing is
AM. AM is far more sophisticated,
and its potential is enormous.
A lot of major aerospace
organizations already use AM to
create lightweight materials for
aircraft design. Boeing uses
selective laser sintering to create
150 different parts for the F/A18E
Super Hornet aircraft. Airbus
uses AM to to build metal
components for communication
satellites. Even the U.S. Air Force
uses Markforged to produce
small parts for aircraft repairs.
So, what are the benefits of
using AM in aerospace
production? Here are five:
1. reduce production time and
costs.
Traditional manufacturing
often involves multiple steps
with sub-optimal tooling and
assembly processes. AM
consolidates these factors
and streamlines production,
all while reducing overhead
costs. Prototyping,
customization, and ondemand
production are all
more feasible with AM.
2. Create complex geometry
and lightweight structures.
AM allows the creation of

4. Consolidate complex parts.
Through AM, complex assemblies can be
consolidated into a single part, reducing the
number of components, fasteners, and potential
points of failure. This consolidation enhances
reliability, reduces weight, and simplifies
maintenance in aerospace systems.
