Scholarships inspire the next generation of engineers

Scholarship to support students
pursuing degrees in engineering.
SAE aims to award seven
scholarships of $5,000 on an
annual basis to qualified
applicants.

Environmental Engineering
Allen Ho is frustrated.
As a phone repair technician,
he knows what holds these
ubiquitous devices together:
glue, and a lot of it. More than
necessary, according to Ho, who
realized early in his job that cell
phone manufacturers seem to
intentionally build their devices
so they're nearly impossible to
repair. Batteries are glued to
excess, and frequently replaced
parts, such as charging ports
and keyboards, are placed
beneath other components,
which makes them difficult to
access.
" These hostile design choices
force consumers to throw their
electronics away instead of
repairing and reusing them, " Ho
wrote in his winning scholarship
essay.
Yes, Allen Ho is frustrated. But
he's also inspired.

" The Donald and Barbara Mozley
scholarship is an early investment
into the sustainability startup I hope
to launch. It gives me confidence
that I'm going down the right path
and confirm that others believe in
my vision. "

" My time as a repair technician has motived me to
become an engineer so I can take action and improve
the sustainability of our product life cycle, " wrote Ho.
" However, I can't get a regular job after college if I
want to truly make a difference. As a typical engineer,
I may have to violate my values by designing
unsustainable products if it's in my employer's
financial interests. As an employee rather than an
employer, I won't have the power to choose what I
work on. "
To make the system-and the planet-a better
place, Ho wants to launch his own green
engineering company after graduation. He wants to
create repairable and eco-friendly products that are
built to last. He wants to shift the cultural paradigm
away from unnecessary waste and towards intuitive
repair.
As president of his school's National Honor Society,
vice president of Mu Alpha Theta, Science Olympiad
team captain, Future Business Leaders of America
state officer, and more, Ho is an ambitious, aspiring
engineer who will certainly leave a positive mark on
the world. n
