SAE automation
levels explained
Since its initial launch in 2014,
SAE J3016 has become the
industry's de facto reference for
driving automation taxonomy.
This standard defines SAE's six
levels of driving automation:
* level 0: No driving
automation. Human drivers
are in full control of the
vehicle.
* level 1: Driver assistance.
Human drivers are in control,
but the vehicle has limited
assistance features, such as
lane centering OR adaptive
cruise control.
* level 2: Partial driving
automation. Human drivers
are in control, but the vehicle
has some assistance features,
such as lane centering AND
adaptive cruise control. Most
new consumer cars fall into
this category.

* level 3: Conditional driving automation. Human
drivers are behind the wheel, but the vehicle can
drive itself under limited conditions and will not
operate unless all required conditions are met.
Otherwise, a human must drive.
* level 4: High driving automation. Human drivers
are optional at this level. However, similar to Level 3,
the vehicle will only operate under limited
conditions; otherwise, a human must take over
physically or remotely to move the vehicle. This is
the level used by driverless robotaxis, and vehicles
may not even have pedals or a steering wheel
installed.
* level 5: Full driving automation. No human drivers
necessary. This level of automation means the
vehicle can drive itself under all conditions.
