Best practices
The AVSC's best practices are technology-neutral
documents that outline key considerations to safely
deploy ADS-DVs on public roads. Due to its relatively
small size, the AVSC's members can come to an
agreement faster than many technical standards
committees. The benefits of this are twofold: not only
is knowledge dispersed quickly, but global standards
development organizations like SAE can reference
AVSC's best practices as they develop their own
technical standards.
" Best practices act as guidelines that readers can
comply with in a voluntary fashion, " said Darcyne
Foldenauer, AVSC Director. " They help ensure safety is
a priority and processes are established to minimize
risk to AV users and those around them. "
AVSC members must come to a 100% consensus
agreement before a best practice is published, which
ensures pre-competitive alignment on essential safety
considerations. As of this writing, the AVSC has
published 13 best practices, with more publications-
including the consortium's first revision to a preexisting
best practice-coming soon. As AV
technologies continue to evolve, there is no shortage
of potential subjects.
" We have so many topics that it is hard to
determine which ones are the most important, " said
Foldenauer.
One of the AVSC's most recent publications is AVSC
Best Practice for ADS Remote Assistance Use Case, a
document that offers a comprehensive framework for
integrating remote assistance within the context of
ADS. When an SAE Level 4 or Level 5 AV meets an
unforeseen condition on the road, remote human
assistance is used to provide guidance, suggestions, or
recommendations to the vehicle from another location,
without direct control of the vehicle.

Public acceptance
One of the AVSC's major goals is
to improve public acceptance of
ADS-DVs. Foldenauer wants the
public to understand that AV
technology is, generally, quite
safe.
" People want to know that
these are safe vehicles, whether
riding in one or seeing one on
the roads, " she said. " Our goal is
to build public trust and
acceptance of automated
vehicles as a safe and beneficial
form of transportation. "
A recent study published by
researchers from the University
of Michigan Transportation
Research Institute, the Virginia
Tech Transportation Institute,
General Motors, and Cruise
estimated that human drivers
cause 0.24 injuries and 0.01
fatalities per million miles driven,
whereas driverless cars cause
0.06 injuries and 0 fatalities per
million miles. Although these
statistics demonstrate the
improved safety of driverless
vehicles, swaying the public
opinion often takes more than
pure numbers.
According to a Pew Research
survey conducted in November
2021, 44% of American
participants believed that
