driverless vehicles are a flat-out bad idea for society.
Interestingly, this same survey found that Americans
who have heard " a lot " about driverless cars are twice
as likely to call AVs a " good idea " than those who only
know a little about AVs, and four times as likely as
those who are completely in the dark.With this in
mind, perhaps the best way to gain public trust in AVs
is to simply share information and demystify the
technology. On that front, the AVSC has got it
covered: since the AVSC's launch, the consortium's
best practices have received over 20 thousand
downloads from 30 countries across the globe.
To improve public acceptance, the AVSC also aims to
present a unified front. " Showing that our members are
willing to set aside normal organization competition to
collaborate on developing practices that are for a
higher purpose [can help improve public confidence in
AVs], " according to Foldenauer. Sharing stories on
testing and validation, and open communication about
the work that goes into developing a best practice, are
other ways the AVSC hopes to improve public
perceptions of automated technologies.
Additionally, the AVSC now has quarterly meetings
with the National Highway Traffic Safety Association
UPDATE
(NHTSA) wherein the consortium
provides a preview of their latest
best practice before it's
published. This opens the floor
for feedback. Collaboration with
the NHTSA is a two-way street:
the AVSC has been asked to
provide feedback on some of the
NHTSA's own studies on AV
technologies.
" This type of collaboration is
what drives consideration of
future [best practice] topics, "
said Foldenauer.
AVSC at WCX 2024
There are a ton of offerings to
choose from at WCX, SAE's World
Congress Experience, but for
those curious about AV safety, the
panel " Best practices in
autonomous vehicle safety: A
conversation with the AVSC " may
be of particular interest.
Moderated by Foldenauer, with
panelists including representatives
from Motional, Uber, VW, and
Waymo, this is a great opportunity
to learn more why the
consortium's best practices are
vital to the industry. Join the AVSC
