For CFRPAM, there are several
approaches being presented to
the aerospace market from
several original equipment
manufacturers (OEMs), each with
strengths and weaknesses. There
are many unsettled issues for
this new technology, but many of
them are highly dependent on
the specific material and/or
process, such as part design
using CFRPAM and structural
analysis of CFRPAM parts.
It is crucial to reduce the
number of discontinuities in the
toolpath, both to enhance
properties and to avoid the need
for fiber cutting. Several of the
current demonstration articles
utilizing CFRPAM technology
have been cylindrical or in a
shape that allows the process to
start at one end and just keep
wrapping around and around to
an end of the path. There are
basically no stops and no ends to
deal with, and this is a very nice
and convenient geometry for this
process. Perhaps it becomes the
only type of configuration that
makes business sense. When the
process must consider many
start/stop sequences in order to
create a structure, it creates a
