International Journal
of Materials and
Manufacturing
In the realm of mobility and transportation,
the quest for innovation has no end. From
the development of advanced materials to
the optimization of manufacturing
processes, researchers and engineers will
always strive to propel the industry
forward. At the forefront of this endeavor
is the SAE International Journal of
Materials and Manufacturing, a peerreviewed
publication dedicated to
advancing materials science, design
engineering, testing methodologies, and
manufacturing practices.
Mark Barkey, Ph.D., a distinguished
figure in the field of aerospace engineering
and mechanics, serves as editor-in-chief of
the journal. With a tenure of over 28 years
as professor and head of the Aerospace
Engineering and Mechanics Department at
the University of Alabama, Barkey brings a
wealth of experience to this role.
Barkey's SAE origins began in graduate

school, " spurred in part by
my working summers in the
automotive industry in Michigan, " he said.
Barkey became an SAE member in 1994;
since then, he has noted that his
relationship with SAE connected him to
numerous, outstanding engineers.
He explained, " These engineers have
helped to mentor me, provided technical
contacts in the industry for both
collaboration and as a source of learning
new techniques and methods for analysis
and design. " It seems that those engineers
paid it forward: in 2021, Barkey received
SAE's Forest R. McFarland Award for
outstanding contributions furthering the
goals of SAE's engineering events, and the
Arch T. Colwell Merit Award in 2003 in
recognition of his outstanding technical
papers.
Considering the latter award, it should
come as no surprise that the SAE
