Recently, we've heard that the
metaverse is struggling. This isn't
entirely surprising, as some level
of disenchantment was
anticipated for two key reasons:
the underlying technologies are
still developing, and there's
controversy over the term
" metaverse. "
The former reason concerns
technological maturity, which is
currently between the Gartner
Hype Cycle's " peak of inflated
expectations " and the " valley of
disillusionment. " The 2021 Meta

inspired many, which fueled high
expectations. However, we need
to maintain realistic
expectations, since the full

potential of the metaverse could take five to ten years
to realize. For instance, while virtual and augmented
reality technologies have significantly advanced,
challenges remain in visual quality and usability,
leading to frustration.
The latter reason is to specify: which metaverse we
are talking about? Many technology players choose to
avoid the term " metaverse " due to its strong
association with Meta company. Instead, they adopt
their own distinct terminology when deploying the
convergence of enabling technologies like extended
reality, internet of things, and artificial intelligence.
Thus, the crucial question becomes: are companies
adopting metaverse technologies? The answer is a
resounding " YES. "
