IVHM digital twin is
considered along with the

management for digital twin

biggest limitations for digital
twins is also its core strength,

application of advanced ML
and AI algorithms. The

to drive forward the adoption of digital twins in

* Standards for adopting digital twins in iVHM:
There is an absence of a universal standard or
framework for digital twins and their applicability to
IVHM. Establishing such standards is of great
importance and value. In the meantime, existing
technological standards may need to be used or
adapted to support digital twin development.
This SAE EDGE™ Research Report should be
considered only as a first step toward clarifying the
issues around the adoption of digital twins in IVHM.
The intention behind this and other SAE EDGE™
Research Reports is to start a dialogue among
interested parties on important industry-wide
topics that require further attention. The
expectation is that these explorations of unsettled
areas of technology will lead to the formation of
working groups and, ultimately, committees that
can address and resolve the issues they raise. In
turn, this will help produce a framework for
developing a common vocabulary of definitions,
best practices, protocols, and standards needed to
support continued progress toward safer and more
innovative products.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Paul Anthony Phillips obtained his Doctor of Engineering in
Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manchester with a
focus on health monitoring of electromechanical landing gear
actuation. He has published over 40 scientific peer-reviewed papers
and is a strong advocate of intellectual property, holding 25 patents
related to thermal management component design, additive
manufacturing, condition monitoring, and digital technologies.
