Building a sustainable future at
Pittsburgh international Airport
TECH FOCUS:
SUSTAiNABlE MOBiliTy
Over 4 million honeybees reside on the airport's property, which supports
their critical role in the ecosystem.
at minimum, 75 percent of materials for the project
are renewed or reused rather than being sent to
landfills or for incineration. Much of this material is
being used to build the terminal's new roads.
Additionally, rainwater is being harvested to water the
plants that will live on the outdoor terraces, a space
for passengers to experience nature without ever
leaving the airport.
The airport is also working to bring hydrogen and
sustainable aviation fuel on-site, a goal Cassotis shares
with Frank Menchaca, president of SAE's Sustainable
Mobility Solutions, recognizing that transportation
accounts for the largest share of greenhouse gas
emissions in the U.S. and around the world.
Environmentally friendly partnerships
Like SAE, the Pittsburgh airport aims to use modern
technology to solve industry problems. The airport's
xBridge innovation center drives innovation by
developing and testing new technologies on-site,
many of which put sustainability first. xBridge allows
PIT to develop new technologies and partner with
UPDATE
startups to bring groundbreaking
technology to the airport.
This year, PIT worked with
local and national companies to
introduce several new
technologies to enhance
sustainability at the airport. A
waste digestor from Ecotone
Renewables turns food waste
turns into eco-friendly fertilizer,
which PIT maintenance crews
then use to treat plants on
campus.
Another xBridge partner,
TrashBot, has installed its
technology at the airport's
Baggage Claim levels. The
machine looks like a standard
trash bin, but it uses AI and
robotics to analyze and separate
recyclable waste from landfill
waste as soon as travelers chuck
something into it. And xBridge
partner AlgenAir's innovative
product can be found at the
airport's landside terminal-it
improves air quality by using
algae to filter carbon dioxide in
and impurities out while releasing
oxygen into the terminal.
These and other initiatives are
just some of the ways PIT is
working with partners like SAE
and others to lead the airport
industry to a cleaner, greener
world. n
