Textiles:
The new ore

In a linear textile economy, that's
where the story ends: with
overburdened landfills, polluted
waters, razed forests, and still, a
constant need for more.
Under circularity, however, the
outlook is much brighter. LeeJeffs
and Safi refer to the world's
carbon-rich textile and plastic
waste as the new " ore, " nextgeneration
resources with the
potential to restore
environmental, economic, and
societal balance. In their report,
the authors highlight several
opportunities for the mobility
industry to utilize these
resources, including transforming
textile waste into sustainable

aviation fuel (SAF) feedstocks, recycling aircraft
interiors, and optimizing EV plastic use. They also call
for the implementation of strong regulations that
prioritize recyclability and circularity throughout the
entire value chain.
The report ends with a list of nine
recommendations, the ultimate being " Create a
consortium to drive change, " a topic on which LeeJeffs
and Safi will write in a second, follow-up report.
" We are gluttons for punishment, " Lee-Jeffs
laughed. " We signed up for our next report to be
published to really talk about what it's going to take
to activate a cross-sectoral collaboration consortium
to create that circularity with textile and plastic using
the superpowers of the mobility sector. "
