To address this new demand,
SAE International convened
subject-matter experts from
across the industry, including
ChargerHelp!, to align on the
most critical skills technicians
must master to perform the job
successfully. To set an industry
standard, SAE's Sustainable
Mobility Solutions innovation
unit has launched the Electric
Vehicle Supply Equipment
(EVSE) Technician Certification
program. It confirms that EVSE
technicians have the knowledge,
skills, and competencies required
to maintain, repair, and operate
EV charging stations. Candidates
can register for the electronic
examination at Pearson VUE
testing centers across the U.S.;
those who pass will be certified.
In February, SAE, Detroit at
Work, and ChargerHelp!

celebrated the first training cohort's course
completion in Detroit. That group of 15 trainees
learned their new job skills free of charge; the Detroit
program hopes to train 100 more participants by the
end of the year.
Statistics on America's existing EVSE workforce,
supply and demand factors, and salaries by region are
still imprecise, but clear in that prospective certificate
holders are benefiting from some infrastructural
tailwinds. The overall American labor market is
becoming worryingly complex, but the EV technician
field sits at the intersection of large-scale investment,
institutional requirements, worker preferences, and
societal necessity. As far as these things go in an AItransformed
job market, it seems a career calculation
that is worth the investment. n
