Experts weigh in on the
future of flight fuels
TECH FOCUS:

accepted today, as there simply
aren't enough resources to
conduct, witness, or review flight
tests from every new entrant in
the field.
" Because this industry will be
relatively small for the
foreseeable future, maybe these
challenges will not matter too
much, " Rajamani speculated.
" Also, the EV industry is
exploding, so the aviation sector
can piggy-back off the progress
there rather than having to
develop all technologies locally. "
Rajamani predicted that a " tiny
sliver " of the aviation industry
will be electric-aircraft certified
in the next five to ten years.
Anybody's guess
As the negative consequences of
a warming planet increase, so
too does the importance of
decarbonization. However, it
looks like it'll be quite a few
years-decades, even-before
the aviation industry catches up
to the comparatively rapid
progress of other transportation
sectors.
Where hydrogen is concerned,
Moran noted, " Significant capital
investments will be required, and
the operational costs and fueling
timelines must be comparable to

existing commercial ground systems to the greatest
extent possible. " He then added that SAE's Hydrogen
Airport Task Group (AE-5CH), of which he is a
member, is working address this barrier.
" Engineers and stakeholders can contribute to this
and similar activities to harmonize the necessary
standards needed for liquid hydrogen adoption in the
aviation sector, " Moran said.
Looking at the entire mobility landscape, Rajamani
made a compelling point: " The percentage that
aviation contributes to greenhouse gas emissions will
continue to grow as other sectors, such as
automobiles and ships, decarbonize more rapidly. This
will put governmental and public pressure on the
industry to do more.
" How they react to these forces and yet stay
profitable is anybody's guess at this time. " n
