The importance of community
integration in AAM
TECH FOCUS:
URBAN MOBILITY AND UAM
typically integrated with the
state aviation system plans
(SASPs). Additionally, all of the
modes of transportation are
dependent upon standards, but
these standards don't typically
apply to multiple forms of
transportation. For example,
there are approximately 20
current SAE noise measurement
standards each for aviation and
ground transportation.
Know how the stakeholders
are engaged
Metropolitan planning
organizations (MPOs) and regional
transportation planning
organizations (RTPOs) or rural
planning organizations (RPOs) are
required by federal law to have
public participation plans. The
Federal Aviation Administration's
(FAA) Community Involvement in
Airport Planning advisory circular
(AC) describes expectations for
community involvement in airport
planning. These are built upon
decades of experience and lessons
learned the hard way. Since AAM
is envisioned to be an integral part
of the broader transportation
system, an integration of both
involvement efforts could be a
viable path to reach both sets of
interested stakeholders.
UPDATE
Be familiar with both ground
and aviation taxonomies
I've already mentioned several terms and their
acronyms in this article; sometimes, frustratingly,
these terms evolve. Take communications for
example: V2V is defined as technologies to allow
vehicle to vehicle communications, but there's also
V2X (vehicle to everything), V2I (vehicle to
infrastructure), and V2P (vehicle to pedestrian), all of
which are or will need to be supported by standards
for formats, protocol, and security. It's the across
transportation modes that term awareness is the first
step to being able to ultimately efficiently and
seamlessly integrate travel plans from your door, to
the airport, to a shuttle, and ultimately to your
destination.
To effectively enable AAM, it will require integration
both within our communities and within our current
transportation systems. It will be challenging, but
industry, government, academia, and local
communities working together will lead to success.
Borrowing from an aviation community saying- " If
you've seen one airport, you've seen one airport. "
Community integration will be similar, as each
community is unique; they have their own values,
culture, climate, and existing transportation systems.
Building on these initial steps, integrated community
planning can progress to documenting a community's
unique goals, needs, and determining how each
transportation mode can best contribute. n
