Existing Telsa NACS EVSE provide arc
detection by looking for sudden changes in
voltage/current waveforms. For example,
arc forming from excessive side loads from
an operator tripping over a cable could be
detected and stopped as/before they form.
The ability to detect and stop arcs increases
the life of the connector contacts and can
also be used to indicate when servicing is
required.
Building on the technical foundations of
the SAE J3400 discussed in SAE J3400
and the Game-Changing Advances in AC
Charging, the latest updates to SAE J3400
and SAE J3068 facilitate the broad
deployment of shared-use EVSE utilizing
detachable (carry-along) cable assemblies.
The SAE Recommended Practice provides
more explicit guidelines on these systems'
use and technical requirements. This
approach supports higher renewable
energy penetration and addresses mass
electrification's economic and technical
challenges by ensuring that vehicles remain
connected during their parked periods,
integrating flexible energy transfer, adding
grid storage capacity, and reducing overall
system cost.
A line of vehicles waiting to fast charge is
inherently not aligned with reductions in
peak grid usage without other
complexities, such as additional stationary
storage. Certainly, long-distance in-route

charging is an essential prerequisite for
transport electrification, but ideally,
vehicles should start their local trips from
their typical parking spot with the energy
needed. This is why it's essential to have
methods that allow us to install, use, and
maintain more stations for the same dollar
society spends.
Standards improve the market by
establishing clear guidelines for
interoperability and robustness, ensuring
that products from different manufacturers
can work together seamlessly. This fosters
healthy competition by allowing companies
to innovate within a framework that meets
performance expectations, benefiting
consumers with reliable and compatible
products.
The NACS Task Force, led by individual
experts representing different aspects of
the industry, will continue to push forward
with rapid revisions to provide responsive
and innovative standards for EV power
transfer.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Dr. Rodney McGee is a research engineer at the
Transportation Electrification Center at the University of
Delaware. In this role, McGee leads a team of engineers
in designing, testing, and productizing advanced
bidirectional EVSE and EV systems while working closely
with OEMs and suppliers to foster cutting-edge
technology development. In addition to his work at the
University of Delaware, McGee chairs SAE's Medium- and
Heavy-Duty Conductive Power Transfer Task Force (SAE
J3080) and the NACS (SAE J3400) Task Force. Through
these leadership roles, he actively contributes to
advancing industry standards in the electric vehicle
sector.
