TECH FOCUS: HYDROGEN
AND ALTERNATIVE FUELS
Though EVs and hydrogen fuel
cell powertrains are viable for
light-duty applications, supply of
renewable electricity and
sufficient distribution
infrastructure remain limiting
factors for heavy-duty transport.
For Europe, to meet climate
objectives that prevent global
mean surface temperature from
rising above 1.5 °C, two-thirds of
the total trucks sold would have
to be replaced with zeroemission
vehicles before 2030.
This would also require
additional investments of €4
billion (nearly $4.5 bn USD) and
€30-40 billion (approximately
$33.5-44.7 bn USD) for EVs and
EV charging infrastructure,
respectively. Whilst we transition
to zero-emission vehicles, dropin
fuels offer a near-term
solution to decarbonizing our
existing global fleet.
While fuel performance and
stable combustion are important,
it is imperative that future fuels
are also developed with the
intention of mitigating exhaust
pollutants that continue to
contribute to air pollution. For
context, combustion of
petroleum-derived fuels has
considerably reduced global air
quality due to increased levels of

important.
atmospheric pollutant emissions, especially
particulate matter (PMx) that have exhibited severe
consequences for public health. In 2019, The World
Health Organisation (WHO) estimated that ambient
(outdoor) air pollution was responsible for 4.2 million
premature deaths globally; this equated to 7.8% of
global deaths in 2019 and the death rate has remained
at an almost constant level since 1990, despite
increasingly stringent regulation controlling pollutant
emissions.
In addition to HVO, fast-pyrolysis bio-oils (FPBOs)
are promising drop-in fuels that are renewable and
derived from biomass. The main advantage of
thermochemical conversion technologies such as
pyrolysis or hydrothermal liquefaction is that a wide
variety of inedible biological feedstocks can be
utilised and converted into fuel. The choice of
feedstock can help to establish a role of future fuels
within the circular economy by contributing towards
