Longtime Brake Colloquium Executive
Committee chair hands over reins
of brake test technology. The SAE Fellow
designation is awarded to an elite group of
mobility professionals who have made a
significant impact through leadership,
research, publishing, innovation, and
volunteering. Time and again, Roy has
proven himself as most deserving of the title.
Of course, it would be impossible to
discuss Roy's SAE involvement without
mentioning the annual Brake Colloquium
and Exhibition.
Today, the Brake Colloquium and Exhibition
brings together over 700 key participants
and has inspired other conferences in Europe,
Brazil, China, and Asia. But when the event
first took place at the Ford Technical Center,
in 1977, it was a humble affair attended by just
100 industry members.
" It was an opportunity to get people
together, " Roy reflected. " This was a
tabletop display with the opportunity for
engineers to share experiences and
problems. Technical presentations delivered
with a beamer to display test results. "
Roy was there since Day One, along with
other founding members from the braking
industry, including Dr. Marv Weintraub
(Ford), Phil Dougherty (Thiokol), Phil Garth,
John Brown (ABEX), Dan McLaughlin
(Schenegdy), Bob Carlson (AMFI), Seong
Rhee (Bendix), and Bruce Palmer (Palmer).
Together, this troupe of industry experts
organized a central forum for members of
the braking community to work through the
most prescient issues of the time.

SAE became involved with the Brake
Colloquium five years after the inaugural
event. Forty-two years later, and the
founders' original vision continues to
thrive.
" The Brake Colloquium is the primary
annual event for the braking industry in the
U.S./North America space, " said Rob
Mangan, director of equipment sales at
LINK. " This event brings the broadest
possible audience together for a few days
that otherwise would not meet annually. It
is our most impactful event of the year for
maintaining relationships with existing
partners and cultivating new opportunities
that simply could not materialize
otherwise. "
" Over the past 42 years, there have been
numerous moments which I have been
immensely proud of with regards to the
Brake Colloquium, " Roy said. " Virtually
every critical member of the brake industry
has attended the Brake Colloquium, at
some time. "
