Longtime Brake Colloquium Executive
Committee chair hands over reins
ENGINEERING EVENTS
A well-earned break
During the 42nd annual Brake Colloquium and
Exhibition, which took place in September, Roy
officially announced his departure from the role of
Brake Colloquium Executive Committee chair after
holding the position for more than 20 years. He
received a well-deserved honor from SAE for his
lasting impact on the braking industry.
" It feels strange. It's been part of my life for a long
time and kind of a year-round activity as far as I was
concerned, " he said. However, Roy acknowledged,
" We leave a strong executive board with extensive
experience to step in, and I will continue to remain
engaged wherever I can assist the board or SAE
staff. "
Dr. Greg Vyletel, executive director of brake
engineering and product management at First Brands
Group, will act as the new chairman in Roy's place.
Of course, this isn't the last we'll see of the Link
name in the Brake Colloquium's programming. Just
this year, Roy's son Adam co-organized the
colloquium's Testing and Measurement Methods for
New Braking Technologies session, which featured
presentations on powertrain electrification, physical
validation of simulation models, and hardware-in-theloop
testing.
With his legacy, Roy leaves this piece of advice for
future chairs:
" I would advise that the future chairs always seek
out the key and the brightest members of our industry
to present at the colloquium, to ensure that they will
inspire discussions needed by all.
" Look for the latest technology, consult with
executives from around the world. Bring people
together. " n

Roy Link described the Brake
Colloquium as a " year-round
event, " and he wasn't wrong-
though we're only two months
removed from the 2024 event,
it's already time to start looking
ahead to 2025!
The Brake Colloquium's
Technical Program Committee
invites you to share your
expertise through the
development of a technical
manuscript or presentation for
the 43rd annual event, which
will take place September 21-
24, 2025. The deadline to
submit an abstract is February
16, 2025.
Additionally, experts are
needed to help peer-review
brake technology papers prior
to publication. If either of these
