A Q&A with SAE Aero
Design organizers
comment that despite their
struggles at the competition,
they'd " demonstrated
tremendous heart and you can't
teach heart. " The next year, when
they arrived at the flight line,
their plane's livery was heart
themed.
RD: It's definitely walking around
and talking to the teams, hearing
about their struggles and how
they are working through them.
It's always inspiring to me to
hear how their approach and
creative solutions.
In your opinion, how does
Aero Design benefit the
future of aerospace?
MB: Events like this benefit their
industries by offering
opportunities to students to
engage in a difficult, relevant
technical problem in a realistic
way. There are several benefits to
students in particular. First, the
competition affords an
opportunity to " work " in an
industry-relevant process, which
benefits industry by exposing
students to the big-picture of
project management, enabling
students to be much more
effective teammates in their early
career because of their vision of

the end goal. This competition also benefits students
who may not have access to an industry partner for an
internship; this project is a tremendous multi-hundredhour
commitment along with a student's normal
academic work and many hiring managers in industry
are familiar or alums of competitions like this and
appreciate the commitment required.
RD: Real-world problem solving is just something you
cannot replace with a textbook. For many students,
this will be the most relevant, hands-on experience
they will get prior to graduation and joining the
industry. As they enter as junior engineers, they will
have had the benefit of working through a complete
design life cycle, conception to test. It's a major leap
for the students as well as a jump start for the
industry for them to have such a head start coming in.
Would you recommend volunteering with an SAE
University Program to other professionals?
MB: I can't help but recommend volunteering to any
professional who will listen. It takes nearly 200
volunteers to complete each competition event and
over a man-year of work for each competition
