STANDARDS & COMMITTEES Tackling loss of power control for electric aircraft AIR7130 aims to improve the safety of electrified aviation. By JEAN-CLAIR PRADIER, Safran Electrical & Power. The aviation industry is buzzing with the potential of electrified aircraft. A key system, electric engines, provides propulsion for these emerging aircraft whether the overall powertrain is allelectric, hybrid, or fuel cell based. Electric engines have characteristics that are unique compared to conventional gas turbine and reciprocating engines used to power conventional aircraft, and so will have different fault accommodation characteristics that must be addressed to meet regulatory safety requirements. The civil aviation authorities and industry have been working together to develop industry standards that support 36 February 2025 UPDATE Shutterstock/Gorodenkoff
