The first of its kind
What makes SAE AIR8466/
EUROCAE ER034 so unique?
" There are plenty of airport
standards for fueling jet A-1 fuel, but there haven't
been any standardization efforts yet for hydrogen
stations, " Schneider said. " It was quite a coordination
between international aircraft OEMs, tier-1 suppliers,
regulators, and hydrogen companies to find
consensus on an airport hydrogen fueling station
guideline, but we did it. This is a guidebook for
hydrogen safety and fueling station definitions. SAE
AIR8466/EUROCAE ER034 gives the industry a
starting point for fueling stations for hydrogen
aircraft in gaseous and liquid form. "
Currently, aviation accounts for around 3% of
global CO2
emissions; that could rise, unabated, to
22% by 2050. Although sustainable aviation fuels
(SAF) offer a hydrocarbon fuel " drop-in " solution to
start reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the near
term, hydrogen holds great long-term potential as a
solution to decarbonize aviation and other heavy
transportation sectors, helping to reach the
industry's net zero goal.
