Systems design
engineering: What is it,
and why does it matter?
Learn how to increase efficiency
and reduce manufacturing costs.
Along with sustainability, systems design engineering
(SDE) is taking over the manufacturing world. For
those organizations that value progress-meaning
pretty much every organization out there-now is the
time to start embracing and investing in SDE.
But what is exactly is SDE? Our team spoke with
David Genter, SAE course instructor, to learn more
about this newly developed methodology.
Understanding SDE
SDE is a discipline that focuses on integrating systems
engineering principles into the design process from
the earliest phases of concept development using the
system-level assessment (SLA) methodology (hold
that thought-we'll cover SLA methodology below).
" The way the systems engineering principles are
applied today, it's almost at a point where it's too late in
the design process to really have a great effect or have
the most effect to the way products are designed, "
Genter said. " What systems design engineering does is
it moves the systems engineering work up in the
earliest phases of the design process, so I can take
advantage of the knowledge that I need to have to
design my products the best, the best they could be, by

Incorporating the SLA
methodology
Ten years ago, the industry
identified a need to improve
system engineering standards by
incorporating the design
principle of learning. Developed
in conjunction with SDE, the SLA
methodology is an approach that
fulfills this need by gathering and
integrating subject-matter expert
knowledge across an
organization's teams.
