choose from our 12 Products of the
Month the technology they felt was the
most significant new introduction to the
design engineering community in 2021.
In the last two years, COVID-19 has
dominated the news, and manufacturers
such as Philips and Minnetronix and multiple
university research
groups shifted their focus
to developing products to
address the pandemic.
Diagnostic tests, vaccines,
and ventilators took
center stage. Researchers
even developed an AI-based tool to help
medical staff determine which COVID-19
patients would need a ventilator. With
that backdrop, it is no surprise that our
readers selected a product that could help
manufacturers in their quest to build better
ventilators to help fight the pandemic.

An evaluation kit from Sensirion,
Stafa, Switzerland, and Nicolay, Nagold,
Germany, enables ventilator manufacturers
to take proximal measurements of
respiratory gas rates as well as ventilation
pressure. A pressure sensor is physically
integrated into the connector cap and
on the software side in the evaluation
electronics. Pressure measurements are
taken and converted into an electrical
signal directly at the patient's side; the
pressure signal is then sent to the ventilator
electronically. The signal is transmitted
through an existing cable used to
measure respiratory gas flow values. The
tube for tapping pressure is only a few
centimeters long and runs to the cap on
the flow sensor, where the pressure signal
is converted into an electrical signal.
