n Multiphysics Software
COMSOL, Burlington, MA, has released
the latest version of its modeling and simulation
software, COMSOL Multiphysics® version
6.1. This release brings major upgrades
to the fluid flow and mechanical simulation
products. The CFD Module now includes
high-fidelity turbulent flow with detached
eddy simulation (DES). This yields the accuracy
of large eddy simulation (LES) with substantially
less computational effort. A new and
fast method for mechanical contact is included
in the Structural Mechanics Module and
the MEMS Module. It introduces new functionality
for solids, shells, and membranes
with full support for self-contacting surfaces.
There is a new method for assigning materials
to thin structures that makes it easier to analyze
gaskets, adhesive layers, and claddings.

n Reciprocating Head
Guill Tool, West Warwick, RI, has released a new reciprocating head. The
traditional tip and die assembly is replaced with a linear reciprocating assembly
that changes the tube's profile within a given length. This process is repeated
throughout a single extrusion run without interruptions. Cutting capability,
in association with the extrusion speed, cuts the finished product to
length. Only one extrusion run is needed to produce a finished product, as opposed to multiple extrusion
runs with tooling changes along with a manual assembly operation to connect different tubing
shapes. The reciprocating head eliminates an assembly operation as well as in-process inventory.

n Lubricant
A versatile, general-purpose lubricant that prevents rust and acts as a cleaning
agent is available from Fluoramics, Winona, MN. Tufoil Lubit-8 is dielectric with a
breakdown voltage of 28 kV. It has an Extreme Pressure Falex test result of 4500 lbf.
The lubricant is available in a dropper tip dispenser, plus in quarts and gallons. The
16.5 mL (0.557 fl oz) dropper tip bottle provides easy application to small areas.
The lubricant leaves no oily residue, is compatible with all oils and greases, and
remains stable from -51 °C (-60 °F) to 260 °C (500 °F).

n Stainless Steel for 3D Printing
3DEO, Los Angeles, CA, has launched 316L stainless steel in
high volume for metal 3D printing. The material exceeds MIM
standards. A fully austenitic, non-magnetic stainless steel, 316L
(equivalent to UNS S31603) maintains excellent performance at
room and moderately elevated temperatures, as well as excellent
ductility and mechanical performance. The weldable material is corrosion resistant, which
makes it ideal for medical applications that will experience harsh environments.

n Surgical Mask Tester
ForTest, Modena, Italy, has launched an instrument to monitor the
appropriate airflow rate in full compliance with the EN 14683 standard
for surgical mask testing. T9731- EN 14683 includes two air flow meters:
a mass-flow meter with the range of 0.0...20.0 n (l/min) in which a servo-driven
valve is regulated by software and a differential gauge/differential
pressure measurement, which is used to measure the differential pressure of air passing through
a surgical mask in Pa/cm2). Both are fully automatic and can measure airflow rate up to 20,000 cc/
min with the resolution starting from 0.1 cc/min.

n Polycarbonate Copolymer
SABIC, Houston, TX, has introduced two new polycarbonate (PC) copolymer
resins designed to offer a robust chemical and impact resistance, thin-wall
transparency, dimensional stability, and processability. In device applications
such as clear covers, screens and display lenses, the new materials can overcome
key drawbacks of incumbent PC resins and co-polyester resins when exposed to
disinfectants or aggressive chemicals. The new resins include LNP ELCRES™
CRX1314TW copolymer and its biobased equivalent, LNP ELCRIN™
CRX1314BTW copolymer, which offers up to a 42 percent reduction in carbon footprint based on
life cycle assessment (LCA). Both grades feature limited biocompatibility according to ISO 109931.

Covestro, Pittsburgh, PA, has launched an ultradurable material for healthcare
and life sciences. Makrolon® 3638 polycarbonate offers durability from
cryogenic to steam sterilization conditions with high impact strength and
ductility. It has been tested for biocompatibility according to USP Class I, ISO
10993-5 and ISO 10993-10 and meets the requirements for skin contact applications. Ability to be
sterilized using methods most prevalent in the healthcare industry. It is designed to be tough and durable
to withstand everyday use while maintaining structural integrity.
