n Film Coating Technology
Datwyler, Middletown, DE, has developed a film coating technology for elastomeric closures for injectable
drugs. The chemical and functional characteristics of UltraShield have been specifically designed to securely store
drugs under ultra-low temperatures up to -80 °C and to provide compatibility with modern solvent-based drug
excipients. The lubrication of the non-drug contact part of the stopper is fixed with an innovative curing system
not requiring any additional curing agents. The proven concept of a fluoropolymer film coating technology in
combination with an ultra-low extractable rubber formulation forms a protective barrier reducing drug-stopper
interaction to obtain the lowest level of extractables.

Multi-lumen tubing from Zeus, Orangeburg, NC,
helps simplify the design and production of steerable
and deflectable catheters, especially when manufacturers
are required to procure and bundle several
individual liners of varying sizes into a final
catheter assembly. Consisting of one large central
lumen with one to four smaller satellite lumens, the
PTFE Sub-Lite-Wall® multi-lumen tubing enables
advanced catheter designs with improved structural integrity, planarity,
and other precision steering capabilities. All multi-lumens are custom
ordered to a drawing.

n Filmcast Tubing
Filmcast tubing from Confluent
Medical, Scottsdale, AZ, includes lubricious
PTFE-coated liners (supplied
on silver-plated copper mandrel),
polyimide tubing, or composite
tubing configurations with or without braid reinforcement. The
process caters to extremely thin wall thicknesses and tight tolerances,
which make it ideal for high-performance medical tubing
applications. Material is etched to promote lamination, and very
thin tie layers can be added to enhance adhesion. Polyimide is a
great option when strength, durability, or electrical insulation is a
key consideration.

n Linear Servo Drives
Aerotech Inc., Pittsburgh, PA, has
released a precision machine and motion
control platform. The latest additions
include new servo motor drives
with integrated motion controllers
and several advanced features. Two
new servo motor drives feature integrated
motion controllers that can command 12 axes at 20 kHz over a
glass optical fiber HyperWire motion bus. The Automation1-iXL2e is a
compact, single-axis linear amplifier servo drive, and the Automation1-iXC6e
is a high-powered PWM servo motor drive. With MachineApps,
machine and system builders can create machine HMIs for each
deployed Automation1 motion controller.

n Rubber/Silicone Extrusion Head
Guill Tool and Engineering, West Warwick,
RI, has introduced a crosshead with
mechanically assisted gum space (MAGS)
adjustment. The 500 Series is designed specifically
for the flow characteristics and
unique processing challenges of elastomeric
compounds. One of the key features is
the MAGS adjustment system. This method of adjustment allows the
operator to make an effortless adjustment from a single point using
a common socket wrench. Only half of a rotation of the cam nut is
required to loosen and automatically extract the deflector from the
head body. A center-stage concentricity adjustment system significantly
reduces pressure on the tooling.

n Micro Extrusions
Microspec, Peterborough, NH,
can extrude complex medical
parts with ODs down to 0.1 mm.
Capabilities include multi-lumen, micro-extrusions, co- and triextrusions,
and multi-durometer tubing, as well as profiles, encapsulated
stripes, coated wire, bump tubing, and new concepts from
most thermoplastic resins. The company extrudes custom medical
tubing with an outside diameter (OD) from 0.004 to 0.450 in. (0.1
mm to 10 mm) in any quantity, from small development lots to
millions of tubes.

n Leak Testing Equipment Calibration
Marposs, Auburn Hills, MI, has introduced
a universal device that makes the calibration
and validation of leak testing equipment both
simpler and more accurate than offline methods.
The Tecna leak tester control (LTC) is an
inline instrument that sits between any brand
of leak tester and the component being tested.
It connects to each using a Staubli®
brand RBE03 quick-connect Tfitting
(provided), making installation easy. It is equipped with an adjustable
needle valve that lets technicians simulate a leak, then verify that the
connected test equipment will identify the failure and reject components
accordingly. Simulated leaks are enabled or disabled via a button on the
LTC's 3.5 in. color LCD display.
