Arc Welding Robot
TRUMPF (Ulm, Germany) has introduced new
sensors that enable its arc welding robot to program
its own weld path. The robot makes use of
TRUMPF's new smart seam-tracking technology,
which the high-tech company developed in collaboration
with the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing
Engineering and Automation IPA. Housed
in the head of the welding torch, the sensor automatically
calculates the weld path for each part. " We've basically developed a
way for the welding robot to program itself, " says TRUMPF R&D manager Sven
Klingschat. " For users, that means a much easier transition into automated arc
welding - plus a clear competitive edge. "

Handheld Femtosecond Fiber Laser
Calmar Laser (Palo Alto, CA) introduced the Carmel
X-515, the first high power, " hand-held " green
femtosecond fiber laser, targeted for applications in
multiphoton microscopy, 3D-photopolymerization,
optical metrology, ophthalmology,
etc. For those
of you not familiar with the Carmel X-series, it represents
the most compact, highest power, fiber-based
femtosecond lasers on the market today. Each version features an all air-cooled architecture
with a small 2U rackmount controller connected via a robust armored cable
to an ultra-compact laser head. With a power range from 0.25 W to over 2.5 W and
pulse widths of less than 90 fs, the product family now includes the first visible source
with an output at 515 nm.
