protein
for weight management

An improved understanding of appetite regulation
mechanisms by the scientific community continues to
fuel the development of foods and beverages designed to
satiate consumers by helping them feel full and satisfied.
This, in turn, assists them with eating less and ultimately
losing and then maintaining weight.
Fat, fiber and protein are considered the trifecta of satiety,
as they possess unique satiating mechanisms, most notably
taking longer to pass through the digestive system, as
compared to traditional carbohydrates. This delayed transit
contributes to a feeling of fullness.
With protein, research shows that not only does this
macronutrient exert appetite regulation mechanisms, it
also provides additional functions that assist with weight
management. For example, compared to carbohydrates and
fats, proteins provide the greatest thermogenic effect.
"The body requires the most energy to digest and absorb
proteins, as compared to carbohydrates and fats," says
Aaron Martin, R&D Nutrition Innovation Manager at Agropur
Ingredients and a Certified Sports Nutritionist. "In fact,
it takes three times the amount of energy to digest and
absorb protein."
Protein also encourages steady blood sugar levels. When
too many carbohydrates are consumed without the
presence of protein, the body increases the release of
insulin from the pancreas to clear the high glucose in the
blood. This often produces fatigue and mental fogginess,
along with intense signals to eat more. Ingesting protein, on
the other hand, causes the body to release glucagon. This
hormone signals the body to lower blood glucose levels,
thereby not causing hormone-induced hunger pangs.
In addition, protein, specifically BCAAs, stimulates muscle synthesis. Lean muscle mass is important for a healthy metabolism.
