Gigante Prince Valley Super Mercado brings the best of all worlds under one roof – from the tortillas made in the store to the bakery where they produce fresh pastries daily. The deli features a variety of marinated meats, alongside pig feet and cow stomach. For those who prefer to enjoy a quick meal inside the store, Gigante offers a Mexican-American restaurant with a cozy dining area. Sampling is done nearly every day in the bakery department, and Joe Gappy (whose father, Hani, founded the family owned and operated business in 1975) says the secret to their success is having customers of all nationalities try their delicious foods. Samplings include such bakery specialties as strawberry empanadas and piña colada pound cake. A small tray on the bakery counter allows customers – both Hispanic and non-Hispanic – to sample what they choose. “We offer free tastings of foods almost every day. This is the secret to converting customers to our products,” says Joe Gappy. “We cater to all people.” One new merchandising campaign this year, Joe Gappy says, will be to promote empanadas for Cinco de Mayo (May 5) celebrations. Prior to May 5, Gigante Prince Valley plans to ship freshly made empanadas to local radio stations and other media outlets to explain the story behind the empanada and to promote this delicious Mexican pastry as a perfect celebration food for Cinco de Mayo parties and events. “We’re going to try to become the Cinco de Mayo empanada center of Detroit,” Gappy says. Inside the supermarket, a threedoor cooler is positioned in the front of the bakery department and is stocked with many single-serve bakery items. “A lot of nationalities purchase single serve products like Tres Leches cake. We are located on Michigan Avenue, which is a major artery to downtown Detroit. People pull in here as they are driving past the store all the time. We also offer a great meat department that caters to all ethnic groups. The secret to a great grocery store is a great meat department.” Joe Gappy credits their bakery supplier, BakeMark, for helping them achieve great success in the bakery. “Anytime and every time I’ve asked BakeMark for assistance, they have always got the information for me when I needed it.
