When Jacobo's Grocery started in
Omaha, most Hispanic families were
immigrants. The appeal of their bakery
products was in the authenticity. "We
were making the same traditional
bakery products that you would see
in any small town in Mexico," he says.
"Many customers would say that this is
just like their bakery in the hometown
they grew up in."
Today, Jacobo's Grocery is
gradually expanding its product line
as the neighborhood demographics
change, and more non-Hispanics shop
at Jacobo's. Carlos Jacobo estimates
their customer base is now 50 percent
non-Hispanic. "What they know of
Mexican food is what they eat at a
Mexican restaurant," he says. "They
visit our store for the deli, and the deli
acts as a draw to the bakery. When
they see all the fresh bakery products, they are curious and want to
try something new. One department
complements the other. They stop in
to buy our fresh salsa and fresh corn
tortilla chips and then they see they
bakery and buy something there."
One of their key competitive
advantages over other supermarkets in
the Omaha marketplace is the freshness and affordability of their fresh
bakery products, including conchas,
empanadas and other fresh pastries.
"Our customers want something
that is out of the oven only a few
hours at the most," he says. "You can't
fool anyone. It has to be fresh. We
can offer the bakery products that
other stores offer, but we can afford
to give our customers something fresh
every day."
He points out that in 37 years
of business they have never really
advertised. Their business has grown
steadily over the years through word
of mouth. For that reason, "you know
you're making a product they really
want," Carlos says. "It takes time to
make a business prosper and you
need patience. We always tell our
employees: Take care of the customer.
Our products and services are going
to bring them back."
